AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE

The First Several Days

How to take care of yourself in the first week so you heal smoothly.

Take it easy — but keep moving gently

  • Keep moving gently. Short walks around the house help healing and lower clot risk.

  • Take it easy for about 5 to 7 days. Lift nothing heavier than a cup of coffee, and avoid strenuous exercise, bending over, pulling or tugging, prolonged standing, and straining.

  • No driving for 24 to 48 hours after any sedation (longer after a defibrillator — see the device page).

  • Care for the site: keep it clean and dry for 48 hours; no baths, pools, or hot tubs for 5 to 7 days; no lotions or creams until healed. A small bruise is normal and fades over 1 to 2 weeks.

  • If the site is tender: rest, ice on and off for 20 minutes, elevate, and apply gentle pressure.
