IVC Filter Placement & Retrieval

For patients who can't take blood thinners, or who keep forming clots despite them, an IVC filter acts as a safety net in the body's largest vein, catching clots before they reach the lungs. Most filters are designed to be removed once they're no longer needed.

When a filter may be needed

  • A blood clot (DVT or PE) when blood thinners can't be used safely

  • Recurrent clots despite being on blood thinners

  • Certain high-risk situations where temporary added protection is warranted

Placement & retrieval

Through a small puncture, the filter is guided into the inferior vena cava and positioned to catch clots. When it's no longer needed, it's removed in a similarly minimally invasive procedure — and we follow up to make sure timely retrieval happens. Deep Venous Disease →
