Cardiac Catheterization & Coronary Stenting (PCI)

Cardiac catheterization lets us see exactly where and how badly the heart's arteries are blocked, and PCI treats the blockage with angioplasty and a stent to restore blood flow — often in the same setting.

What it diagnoses and treats

  • Coronary artery disease (narrowed or blocked heart arteries)

  • Chest pain (angina) and unexplained shortness of breath

  • Reduced blood flow found on stress testing or other workup

How it works

A thin catheter is guided to the heart's arteries, and contrast dye plus imaging reveals any blockages. If a significant blockage is found, a balloon opens the artery (angioplasty) and a stent holds it open (PCI). Performed in the hospital outpatient department with full coronary support — nearly all patients home the same day.
