Pacemakers, Defibrillators & CRT Devices

When the heart's natural rhythm needs help, a small implanted device can restore it — and, in some cases, save a life. We implant these as outpatient procedures, with nearly all patients home the same day. For many patients, the greatest relief isn't only the steadier rhythm — it's knowing something is watching over their heart, day and night.

The devices and what they do

  • Pacemaker — for a heart that beats too slowly; sends gentle signals to keep the rate steady.

  • Defibrillator (ICD) — watches the heart and delivers a corrective shock if a life-threatening fast rhythm occurs.

  • Biventricular CRT-D / CRT-P — coordinates the chambers in certain types of heart failure so the heart pumps more efficiently.

What to expect

The device is placed just under the skin near the collarbone, with thin leads guided to the heart, using local anesthesia and comfort medication. Nearly all patients go home the same day, with brief limits on raising the arm while the area heals, and routine device checks (often remote). Heart Rhythm Disorders →
